MEMORANDUM FOR PLATOON SERGEANT 05 OCT 2011
SUBJECT: Idea for instruction of Squad Drills dated 09 OCT 2011.
1. PurposeTo prescribe procedures for instruction of Squad Drills, and the coherent completion thereof for First Squad, First Platoon.
The Drill will be completed on Sunday at 2000 hours on 09 OCT 11.
2. AgendaClose Quarters Battle and Room Clearing training, critique, and skill evaluation with Rifle, Caliber .30, M1 in urban and
mixed terrain.
3. TimeThe allotted drill should take approximately 30-45 minutes to complete, depending on number of trials. The remaining
allotment should be used for evaluation, critique, and comparison until 2100 hours.
4. Mapdod_tiger2008
5. SetupThe scope of this drill will depend heavily on attendance. With low attendance, the drill should be completed 1 at a time.
With good attendance, the drill should be completed in a small fireteam of 2 men, with a maximum of 3. The remaining players
should be located on the axis team. The terrain and points of entry are noted below:
Entry Point 1-3:
Entry Point 4:All four entry points must be breached for a successful drill. A breach can include Grenades and Physical Entry and Exploration thereof.
6. ProgressionThis is a live fire drill, with OPFOR dispersed throughout the building. Level of resistance depends on attendance, but all 3
floors should be covered. All OPFOR may return fire and engage at will after the live signal is given. This includes but is not
limited to: Pre-fire techniques, Pre-entrance engagement, and all flanks may be utilized. This drill is to simulate active combat.
Primed Grenades are allowed and encouraged. Knives may not be used, as we are measuring battle effectiveness with a
cartridge-fed weapon.
7. ObjectivesThe Allies objective is to move and suppress all OPFOR located inside the building. The Axis objective is to hold the
building, and only the building. The may not leave the building, but may take evasive movements inside.
8. Special InstructionsPre-drill Speech/Instructions:
"Room Clearing is done successfully with more than one person. The epitome of a good clearing squad consists of 3 people, to
ensure all flanks are covered. There should be no crouching, proning, or otherwise slow movement. Rooms must be cleared
with vigilance to ensure that loss of life is not acquired. The "Fatal Funnel" is the point directly in front of the door, leading into
the room in a Y-Shape. You must move out of this zone at all costs as quickly as possible. Mic chatter can diminish one squad's
ability to clear a room. Always watch the rear to ensure the OPFOR does not use unconventional tactics (Jumping out of a 2nd
story window to approach the first floor door that your team just came in.) In close quarters combat, the Allies always have
the upperhand once they are outside the fatal funnel zone. Allies should be listening for shots fired, and reloading techniques
of their OPFOR to ensure that they expose themselves at the right time. Aiming should be placed in the upper torso.
Automatic weapons are the best tools for Room Clearing, but as they are limited, eventually you will need to learn this skill
with the M1 Garand as well. To be a good automatic gunner, you must learn the basics of room clearing with the M1."Proceed to explain the drill setup, and commence the drill by 2015 hours.
Signed,
First Sergeant
